Senior Backend Engineer

Cape Town, South Africa Full-time Remote-first

The Role

We're looking for a pragmatic senior engineer to own our backend infrastructure and API development for our growing solar financing platform. You'll work closely with the full team to build reliable, scalable systems.

What You'll Do

  • Own the backend: Design, build, and maintain our Node.js/TypeScript API using Feathers.js
  • Manage infrastructure: Take responsibility for our DigitalOcean and Vercel deployments, CI/CD pipelines, monitoring
  • Ensure reliability: Write comprehensive tests for critical business logic and payment flows
  • Build robust APIs: Focus on scalable, maintainable API design and data integrity
  • Shape technical decisions: Challenge scope, prevent over-engineering, and ensure we solve real problems pragmatically
  • Drive standards: Ensure code quality, testing practices, and best practices across backend systems

What We're Looking For

Required
  • 7+ years of backend development (Bonus if with Node.js and TypeScript)
  • Infrastructure expertise with cloud platforms and monitoring
  • Strong testing mindset for business-critical logic
  • Experience building robust, scalable REST APIs
  • Pragmatic mindset - build what's needed now
  • Independent worker, comfortable with remote work
  • Based in Cape Town for occasional collaboration
Bonus Points
  • Experience with renewable energy, fintech, or subscription platforms
  • Feathers.js or similar Node.js framework experience
  • Test automation and CI/CD pipeline setup
  • AI/ML integration experience
  • Previous startup/scale-up experience
  • Frontend development experience (helpful but not required)
